Question: Solutions X and Y are prepared by dissolving salt in water. A mixture is formed with 16 litres of solution X which is 45 % concentrated and 24 litres of solution Y which contain 1.44 kg of salt in it. Find the total amount of salt that can be mixed in the solution to make it saturated. (Saturated solution is 80 % concentrated solution and 1 % concentration is 10 gm of salt per litre of water. Also, the addition of salt to the solution until the solution is saturated does not increase its volume).

Answer and Explanation

Answer: Option 1

16 liters of solution X is 45% concentrated.

As 10 gm of salt per liter = 1% concentration, so 160 gm of salt in 16 liters = 1% concentration.

Hence, 45% concentrated solution contains 45 × 160 = 7200 gm of salt

Also, 24 litres of solution Y contains 1440 gm of salt.

Now, the new solution contains 7200 + 1440 = 8640 gm of salt in 40 litre solution.

To be a saturated solution, this solution should have 800 × 40 = 32000 gm salt

So, 32000 – 8640 = 23360 gm or 23.36 kg of salt should be added.
