Diffident means hesitant, lacking in self confidence: “The salesgirls diffident manner suggested she was new to the job.”

Dissident means not having the same opinion as other individuals or groups:”Political dissidents are commonplace where tyrannies exist.”
The leader of the dissident faction attending the conference displayed a surprisingly diffident attitude when speaking to the crowd.
