Croak & Crock

Croak means a harsh, rough sounding voice or sound: “By the end of the class, the teacher’s voice was just a croak because of her excessive yelling.” It is also a slang term for death or dying: “John had a kidney failure that caused him to croak.”

Crock is a pot or jar made of baked clay: “That restaurant serves its chilli in a crock.”

Crock also refers to an old, ill, or unhappy person: “Old crocks are in habit of complaining.”

The clerk at the bank who was such an offensive crock apparentlycroaked last week.
