Abjure & Adjure

Abjure something is to renounce it or abstain from it, with the implication that this is done publicly (renounce on oath). For example: Members of the sect were required to abjure all alcoholic drink.
Adjure someone to do something is to request them solemnly to do it. For example: The magistrate adjured the witness to tell the truth frankly.
