The 7×7 square board shown in figure contains a collection of squares with sizes from 1 x 1 to 7 x 7. How many of these squares contain the black center square?

  1. 36
  2. 40
  3. 44

Answers and Explanations

Solution: (c)

All the squares of size 7 x 7, 6 x 6, 5 x 5 and 4 x 4 contain the black square and there are 12 + 22 + 32 + 42 = 30 of these. In addition, 9 of the 3 x 3 squares, 4 of the 2 x 2 squares and 1 of the 1 x 1 squares contain the black square. Required number of squares is 30 + 9 + 4 + 1 = 44
