All the squares of size 7 x 7, 6 x 6, 5 x 5 and 4 x 4 contain the black square and there are 1² + 2² + 3² + 4² = 30 of these. In addition, 9 of the 3 x 3 squares, 4 of the 2 x 2 squares and 1 of the 1 x 1 squares contain the black square. Required number of squares is 30 + 9 + 4 + 1 = 44
