Question: Identify the correct relationship between x and y on the basis of the following two equations:

I- x2 + 17x + 63 = 0

II- y2 – 21y + 85 = 0

Answer Options:

(1) x < y
(2) x ≥ y
(3) x > y
(4) x ≤ y
(5) x = y or the relationship between X and Y cannot be determined

Answer key: 1

Solution:

In equation I, sum of the roots is negative while their product is positive. Hence both roots are negative.

In equation II, sum of the roots is positive and their product is also positive. Hence both roots are positive.
