Article 1: The disappeared

editor's pick for october 1 to 7

The current storm in the Islamic World about the derogatory video, made by an American, about Prophet Mohammed brings this piece in perspective. It almost brings the original villain back in focus, the man who in a way was the first one in the modern world to end up in the muddled and complex topic of religious orthodoxy, dispassionate art and iconoclastic representations. This piece is about none other than Salman Rushdie. The article starts in an autobiographical tone, detailing how Salman Rushdie was dealt the blow of the Fatwa (read death sentence), and recounts the sequence of events on that very day in 1989 when the fatwa was issued. The article then goes to explain how the book came about and how Rushdie got the big novel together, the idea that came to form ‘The Satanic Verses’.

One of my favorite parts of the article is the one where the author actually goes to explain what exactly are ‘The Satanic Verses’ and how they came about in the world of Islam. The history of Islam in a way is explained in a very and dispassionate manner in the article. We are taking no sides in our review but the factual analysis of the author of the article is actually pretty intriguing and keeps one glued to the piece.

The article is effectively an encapsulation of the event that pretty much defines Salman Rushdie’s life. It’s a very long piece and make sure you take out an hour at least to go through the whole of it. Read it because after going through with it, you would be richer in terms of knowledge of history, fiction and lives of one the most famous alive writers on the planet.

Article 2: Let’s not kid ourselves that kirana stores will survive

editor's pick for october 1 to 7

The second piece that we are featuring here is another hot potato: one that features one of the most important changes being affected into the current Indian economic landscape. The article under the scanner discusses the possible outcomes of getting in FDI in retail and how would it change the landscape of the country’s retail stores. The article talks in a very casual voice and tries to introduce sanity in the given context, bring to fore the numerous facets of the issue. The best thing about this article is that the examples it gives are everyday ones and the practical implications of the government move are explained very well.

We also covered the retail-words in this article @Wordpandit. Check them out here.

Article 3: Staring at the water

editor's pick for october 1 to 7

This is the last and final recommendation from our side for today, and the flavor it brings to the table is absolutely different: politics in and of West Bengal. This article is purely and solely based on Mamata Banerjee, is in a way a scathing indictment of her method of functioning and highlights all that is wrong with the politics of the state. The quote of the farmer above is the best possible illustration of what ails West Bengal. Read it and come to a know little more about the leaders of our country, in this case about one who is an expert in shouting from the rooftop for sure but when the implementation comes, question marks remain.
