Altar & Alter

Altar is a place of worship; a stand or platform in a place of worship: “The preist placed the Bible on the altar as he read passages to the congregation.”
Altars are generally present in churches and these are the places where couples take their vows.
Alter means to change, transform, make different, modify: “Tailors alters dresses.”
